  • Chinese-Nepali team makes double first ascent in Upper Mustang
  • Record-holding climber He Jing and Nepali guides conquer two virgin peaks; third summit attempt planned A joint expedition team led by renowned Chinese mountaineer He Jing successfully summited two previously unclimbed peaks in the Mustang Himal Range on Sunday, adding to Nepal's growing list of exploratory mountaineering achievements. He Jing, the first woman to summit all 14 eight-thousanders to their true summits without supplemental oxygen, reached the top of Jyanglatunpu (6,062m) at around 9:25 am, followed by Kekyap Ri (6,187m) at approximately 12:45 pm, according to Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Expedition Director of Seven Summit Treks (SST). The Chinese climber was accompanied by IFMGA Guide Dawa Phinjo Lama Bhote and SST's senior guides Ming Temba Sherpa, Phurba Sonam Sherpa, and Speed Dawa. Five-day approach via alternative route The SST-Pelliot Exploratory Expedition departed Kathmandu on February 4, taking an alternative route into the Ghyun valley previously explored by another SST first ascent team. The climbers crossed Kekyap La pass at 5,600 metres before heading northwest to establish base camp at the foot of the target peaks on February 8. "Summit push began around 2:25 am today," Chhang Dawa Sherpa said. The double ascent marks a significant achievement in the remote Upper Mustang region, which has emerged as a frontier for exploratory mountaineering in recent years. Third peak in sight The team is currently descending to base camp but plans to attempt one more virgin summit, Chhuama IV (6,179m), the last unclimbed peak of the Chhuama Range, Chhang Dawa Sherpa said. "We are thankful to Pelliot for wholeheartedly supporting this expedition including the best-in-class Pelliot gears and equipment which the expedition team tested on virgin peaks in the Himalaya," he added. The expedition was organized by Seven Summit Treks and supported by Pelliot, a Chinese outdoor equipment brand. He Jing is a Pelliot-sponsored athlete. He Jing's historic achievement of summiting all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres without supplemental oxygen has placed her among the most accomplished mountaineers in the world.
