- Yesterday morning I decided to turn around on my summit push on Everest
- Yesterday morning I decided to turn around on my summit push on Everest! Reaching the summit would have marked my 30th ascent of an 8,000-meter peak. I was hoping to summit without oxygen this time. By the time I was acclimatised enough to attempt it, the wind was too strong when I was climbing from C3 to C4, and I chose to follow my own rule of not taking unnecessary risks. As an athlete, I want to perform and to see how my body reacts in different situations. But the journey is truly more important than the summit On this expedition, I was hoping to find joy and happiness in the mountains again. I found that, but it’s also been hard… I have missed having Lama with me. It’s been so empty climbing without him. I think I see him all the time. The most important personal goal of this journey was to search for Lama. Sadly, we were not granted permission to do so this year. That is painful, but we will continue our efforts until he is found… While my attempt has been a failure in terms of summiting and searching, it has been deeply rewarding as a personal experience and important for the work of the Lama Sherpa Foundation. I’ve had valuable conversations with Sherpas, porters, and many others who live and work in the Himalayas. I will share more about what we have done and seen here in a post soon. And that’s where I have fond happiness in the mountains again. My stay here has been an amazing journey with new experiences, enjoyment, friends, being out in nature, and new knowledge. I hope to be back for future attempts. It’s been eight weeks since I left Kathmandu, and tonight it’s so good to be back safe! Tomorrow it’s time to go home. I am ready to see friends and family now!
