  • Don’t attempt to climb without oxygen unless you have experience!
  • Don’t attempt to climb without oxygen unless you have experience! Another post about safety. This it is super important! Last year, 18 people died on Mount Everest. That is 18 too many. I believe that if we all take more responsible choices, we can prevent many accidents. One choice is that of supplementary oxygen. This year, many highly experienced climbers will climb without supplementary oxygen. These mountaineers and sherpas have years of experience. They know the mountains and, most importantly, how their own bodies react to the lack of oxygen. Basically, they know what they are doing. If you are not an experienced high-altitude climber, don’t attempt to climb without supplementary oxygen! You are putting not only yourself, but your climbing partners, your sherpa, and all the other people on the mountain in great danger. Not everyone knows this, but the oxygen level above 8000 meters are so low that just by being there, your body is slowly dying. You get cold faster, experience frost bites and you are more prone to get a heart attack. Your brain can swell, which can lead to nausea and psychosis. You might not think straight and take very bad decisions. It’s a reason we call it the “death zone”. It is hard enough with supplementary oxygen, it still feels like you are suffocating while your heart is racing to keep up. So, dear friends, sherpas and climbers, please help share this message: Don’t attempt to climb Mount Everest without oxygen if you have never climbed a lower 8000m without oxygen before. Just don’t. Don’t put your sherpa and all the other people on the mountain at risk. Myself, I have stood 28 times on an 8000m peak. Most of the times, I had supplementary oxygen. Some I have climbed without, but only when I had enough experience to do so. When Lama and I took the speed record in climbing the 14 peaks last year, we were NEVER reckless about our safety nor the safety of everyone around us. Climb responsible, bring oxygen and take care of each other. Our families at home deserve that.
