  • Mount Everest 2023 anniversary
  • A year ago, at dawn, together with my Guide Nima, I stood at the summit of Mount Everest, 8848.86m. I want to once again express my gratitude to Him. Despite the significant language barrier throughout our entire climb together (from Camp 2, through the summit, and back to Base Camp), I felt his support. Three moments that I will surely remember for the rest of my life. 1. We reached The Balcony (a flat section halfway to the summit at about 8540m) exactly at sunrise. It was the most beautiful moment, magical for me, indescribable. I was so overwhelmed and delighted by this spectacle that Nima probably doubted me. He started explaining that this was not the summit yet. I smiled at him under my oxygen mask, hugged him, and asked for two more minutes. 2. We reached the Hillary Step (8700m), a rocky, exposed traverse. I stopped, looked ahead, and froze. I could barely make out three climbers who were about 30 minutes ahead of me. I couldn’t determine the route because there was simply no one there. Nima moved without hesitation, and my legs gave way... I shouted to Nima to wait for me... I asked him if it was really the right way... he answered - YES - I was petrified. I had only one Polish exclamation in my head... oh sh... I had to ask him again... „Nima, do you think I can make it?” he answered YES and immediately turned back to me. Without hesitation, he wanted to attach another rope to himself for additional safety (meaning if I slipped, I would hang on the fixed line and the rope attached to him, he was also attached to the fixed line). I refused! I can do it myself. We will go through it together but separately, calmly, slowly, step by step, carefully checking that the old fixed lines’ cords do not catch on the crampons... 3. The last moment melted my heart. When we descended from the Khumbu Icefall and approached Base Camp (where the welcoming team was already waiting for us), Nima stopped me, turned to me, carefully zipped up my jacket, adjusted my harness, hat, and hair... and said... now you can go... my heart filled with a sense that he was proud of me.
